January Giveaway with Tantalizing Stitches!{CLOSED}

At the end of 2010 I emailed my favorite shops and authors to ask if they would like to sponsor a Sew Spoiled giveaway. Almost all of them replied with a “Yes!” and El, from Tantalizing Stitches, was first!

She specializes in bag making hardware and supplies! I love looking through her shop. When I see something new I love buying it just to see what new bag I can make with it. Not only does she carry all the hardware you will ever need but 15% of the purchase price of all handmade items and 5% of the purchase price of supplies at most Tantalizing Stitches venues are donated to animal charity.

The winner will receive a $25 Gift Certificate to Tantalizing Stitches!

The giveaway will run through midnight on January 31, 2011 with the winner being announced on February 1, 2011. The winner will be chosen using Random.org. We will send it through email February 2, 2011!

This happened after I dropped it. I was carrying to much into the house and I did not realize I grab my phone too. It slipped and fell on the cement. I felt terrible about it. :(
But this story has a happy ending!
I love Apple! I went to the Apple store and showed them the iPhone. I was expecting to pay for a new one or pay for the glass replacement $199 or more! They gave me a new one free of charge. They said it was part of their accident forgiveness program. It is only good once, it is like a Monopoly "get out of jail free card". If you are not an Mac user, you really should be! I will be for life.
As you can see in the picture my old case was not very reliable. I am planning on making a new case but until then, if you have an iPhone case suggestion I would love to read about it. Please post a comment!

Learning to Sewing with leather!

Honestly, I have always wanted to try sewing leather and 

this seemed as good of a time as any. :)

My new Sew Spoiled Cabrio Tote will be made from temple tulips in azure (main outer shell), laurel dots in periwinkle (lining) from Amy Butler’s Soul Blossom collection with accents of leather.

Where to find leather?

Local is better but if you do not have a leather supplier close here are some online stores.

        1. Hide House

        2. Welcome to Global Leathers

        3. Welcome to Santos Leather by santosleather on Easy (This is where I bought my leather from.)

What are some techniques to use?

        1. Use a leather needle, it makes a hole in the leather instead of pushing the fibers away.

        2. Make sure your stitch length is longer, set to a 3.5 or higher.

            If the stitch length is short, the leather will tear on your seam.

        3. You should sew with a seam allowance of .25”, 

            so you will have less bulk in between your seams.

        4. Decrease your thread tension as you increase the thickness of your leather project.

        5. Use the wallpaper roller to roll the seams flat and glue the seam 

            excess down with cement glue.

        6. Do not iron.

What supplies should you have before you start?

        1. leather needle

        2. wallpaper roller

        3. Rayon, nylon or polyester thread Do not use 100% cotton it will break.

        4. Binder clips

        5. Teflon foot is nice but if you do not have one use baby powder or tissue paper.

        6. Rubber Cement glue

Cowskin-----Pigskin--------Lambskin

It is measured in usable square feet.

iPad Stylus Loop Tutorial!

I love my iPad and in the Sew Spoiled iPad case it is even more functional. I have had a few blog readers and customers ask if I made a stylus loop for my case. Honestly, I thought the iPad did not need a stylus.

That is one of the awesome features, you do not need anything but the iPad to use it.

Recently, I bought a stylus and I can see the usefulness, especially if you are using it for work.

The great part about this tutorial is you can apply it to a Sew Spoiled iPad folding case that has already been made, it is super easy and you can place the loop wherever you’d like on your case.

Materials:

1.5” of .5” elastic

2.5”X 1.5” Scrap of fabric

(Stylus and Sew Spoiled iPad Folding Case)

Step 1: Cut the elastic and fabric.

Step 2: Iron the 2.5” X1.5” fabric in half long ways.

Step 3: Then open the fabric and fold the 2.5” raw edges toward the center line.

Step 4: Fold the fabric in half and press.

Sep 5: Fold the raw edges toward the center crease.

Step 6: Fold in half again and press.

Step 7: Fold the elastic in half and place the elastic loop into the folded fabric.

Step 8: Sew around the fabric.

Step 9: Place the loop on your iPad case and sew it directly to the iPad case. I like the stylus on the right of the iPad when opening the case. You could also place the loop above the iPad on this case. I hope you enjoy this added stylus tutorial for the Sew Spoiled iPad Folding Case!

Barbie Clothes!

My four year old daughter loves Barbies! She is so cute making up stories for her dolls. When we had a snow day earlier this week from school we decided to make Barbie clothes! I had never made Barbie clothes before! I was so excited and she too. We found this awesome simple dress tutorial!

We pulled fabrics out from my stash and cut them into strips. I could not believe how easy it was to make Barbie a simple dress.

I let my Princess sew every stitch. She is to little to press the machine pedal and hold the fabric so she did one or the other. I pinned, ironed and cut but she made the dresses. She is so proud of them and she hasn’t stopped playing Barbies yet!

Question #1
“The fabric shop is so overwhelming! There are so many options and with eye candy all over the place, I usually come out with none of the things I need in the first place. Please help!”
Answer:
First, write a list of your sewing needs before you head out to the store. The best place to write your list is in your sewing space, so you can see what color thread to have or need to buy. It can be hard to remember at the shop.
Second, Take the sewing pattern you wish to make with you, if you have a Smart Phone download your epattern to your phone.
Third, ask the shop keeper for help. In most fabric shops people seem to be very friendly and helpful.

Question #2
“The pattern calls for "Interfacing: 1.5 yards of Pellon® craft fuse 809" .  At the store I found Pellon 809, but it is DECOR fuse (heavier than the Pellon 808 CRAFT fuse).  Also, the 808 was not as wide as the 809.  Just wondering which Pellon interfacing we should use?
Answer:
I have used both and either will work for this project. A good rule of thumb is, The smaller the bag the thinner the interfacing, the larger the bag the sturdier (or thicker) the interfacing.
If you use 808, you will need to buy 3 yards because of the width.

“Where do I find fold over elastic binding? Why did you make the pockets with elastic at the tops?”
Answer:
I buy all of my fold over elastic binding at Sewz Anne’s Fabrics. The price and service is fantastic! She has so many colors to choose from! However, you do not have to use fold over elastic. You can zig zag stitch over regular elastic or shirr the pocket. I will show you all 3 techniques for the sew along.
The elastic pockets allow you to see down into the bottom of the tote. If you do not use elastic, the pockets do not cling to the sides of the Cabrio Tote and when you open the bag you will only see the open pockets.

Sew Spoiled Cabrio Tote Sew Along Closed

Happy New Year!

After reflecting on 2010 Sew Spoiled blog posts, I realized that my favorite posts were about giveaways, tutorials and the Weekender Tote sew along!

The sew along being my absolute favorite! I would love to start a new sew along with you!

We will make the Sew Spoiled Cabrio Tote together!




Here is the Time line...

If you fall behind the group that is ok too try to catch up, some weeks are easier than others.   

Please take a photo or two each week of your progress and load them to the new Flickr group Sew Spoiled Cabrio Tote Sew Along If you do not have a flickr account it is free and you will find that there is an incredible sewing world at your finger tips!!!
There are some ground rules...
1. Have Fun! Make your sewing space relaxing and make sure you have everything you need at your finger tips. (a working machine, seam ripper, new needles, etc.)
2. Take at least one picture of each section of the sew along.
(Gathering, Cutting, Step 2, Step 3-6, Step 7-8, Step 9-11 Step 12- 14. a total of 7 pictures) Post it at Sew Spoiled Cabrio Tote Sew Along.
3. Do Not give up! Ask if you need help!
4. Sew Spoil yourself with a treat of some kind after you complete each part of the sew-a-long. (Ice Cream, bubble bath, long walk or something that you really enjoy doing.)
Please let me know if we need to make any changes. I will be making a Cabrio Tote with the group, posting pictures and writing about our progress right here!
