Handmade Wardrobe Tips

If you are wondering how to make your own wardrobe, you need to start by selecting sewing patterns that are staples already in your current ready wear wardrobe. Think about what you wear most. For me it is skirts, knit dresses, pants/jeans and t-shirts. I am a mom, teacher and casual dresser. I wear dresses occasionally in the spring and summer. After seeing what the majority of my wardrobe looked like, I was able to find sewing patterns in the style of garments that I loved to wear. Making your own wardrobe allows you to create your own look. You can also adapt patterns for your size and build. I am 5'1" so I am classified as a petite. In the department stores if I buy petite clothes the pants are actually too short but in the regular section, all of the pants are too long. Being able to adapt the sewing patterns I buy to fit me makes me super happy!!!  1.) What are the clothes I wear the most? (Current Staples) 2.) What look do I want to have? (Classic, Casual, Pre...

On to Round 2

Recently, I submitted my Sutton Blouse, by True Bias , to the judges for Round 1 of the Super Online Sewing Match, hosted by Sew Mama Sew .  All of the contestant's blouses were beautiful and I could tell each seamstress did their best. This is a tough competition. I was chosen to move on to Round 2 and now we have a new challenge!!! The sewing pattern for round 2 is the Marianne Dress by Christine Haynes !! When I read the pattern for this challenge, I jumped out of my seat! I adore Christine Haynes and all of her designs! She is a wonderful pattern designer, so I knew this would be a great dress! I have her first book Chic and Simple Sewing , it is truly amazing. You know it is a great book when you make several apparel pieces from it. I made the jacket , cape , wrap skirt and school house shift dress . I also interviewed Christine in March of 2011 . Wow, that was four years ago! I am looking forward to making this beautiful dress. I love View A with the pan co...

Sally Dresses

I made these  Sally dresses by Very Shannon  this week. I love the fact that there are only two pages to print, to get started and no taping! That is a huge plus in he PDF sewing patten world. The dress has three sleeve versions and there is no buttons, zipper or closure to worry about. Just slip over the child's head and go. That is perfect in the busy mornings of getting up and going to work, school or to the pool this summer. I was worried about the sizing. If the collar opening is too big, the dress hangs off of the shoulders. If to small, the dress does not fit over the child's head. That is why I made a muslin bodice first to test the bodice out first. In both cases, I went with a smaller size than I normally would have. When reading this pattern look at the finished garment sizing. That helped us with the sizing. I can see this dress being in almost any color and type of fabric. We used what we had on hand mostly this pollen yellow fabric with accents of cotton p...

Spring Wardrobe Collection

This is a collection of clothes I have made for myself over the years but there is no rhyme or reason. This spring I would like to challenge myself and make a spring collection. With dresses, tops and bottoms all coordinating so they all can be mixed and matched together. What fabric collection would you choose if you where going to make your own spring wardrobe collection? I like different blues but I would also like to try new things. What patterns would you use? I complied this mosaic together to see what patterns I have used over the years.  This is good because I can see that I don't have a good pants/ capris pattern yet and I am in need of finding one. 1. Coffee Date Dress , 2. Easter Dress , 3. Washi Front , 4. Washi Tunic with Tova Sleeves , 5. Denim Washi Dress , 6. Skirt (5) , 7. Close up, New Skirt Simplicity 2211 , 8. Skirt (2) , 9. A Wrap Dress for me! , 10. Charlie Bag , 11. Colette Iris Shorts; http://sewspoiled.blogspot...

Barbie Clothes!

My four year old daughter loves Barbies! She is so cute making up stories for her dolls. When we had a snow day earlier this week from school we decided to make Barbie clothes! I had never made Barbie clothes before! I was so excited and she too. We found this awesome simple dress tutorial! Barbie Simple Dress from Craftiness is not Optional We pulled fabrics out from my stash and cut them into strips. I could not believe how easy it was to make Barbie a simple dress. I let my Princess sew every stitch. She is to little to press the machine pedal and hold the fabric so she did one or the other. I pinned, ironed and cut but she made the dresses. She is so proud of them and she hasn’t stopped playing Barbies yet!
