Disclaimer: I am not an expert! This truly was my first suit and there were a ton of times were I wanted to throw it in the trash! But you have to take a step back and see the end result is worth the time to do it. In yesterday's post, I listed many sites with more than enough information about suit making. So here are a few tips if you are a newbie like me. Tip 1: Buy extra swimsuit fabric. I bought 2 yards and played in it. ( My daughters did too, making doll clothes.)  I wanted to see what would happened if I used ________ stitch and stretched it. How would it react to cutting? Did it fray? Could I see holes in the fabric after using my sewing machine needle?  (Get stretch needles!!!)  Tip 2: Keep trying it on! In the directions it would say, "Now try it on and test the fit." Swimsuits are just one of the many garments, I have always bought not made. This year I thought I would give it  a try. Especially after shopping around and seeing the prices, $50-100. I love making sundresses for my girls. Sundresses look amazing and can be wore for special occasions or just to go to the pool. They are also quick to sew and only use 1 to 1.5 yards of fabric depending on the size of the child. Here is the peace sign dress, with flowers, and VW vans all over it. The design on this dress is hard to see but it is Barbie in hot pink. I used the flower girl dress pattern in the Weekend Sewing Book by Heather Ross . I adore this pattern because there are no zippers, buttons or any closures to install. Just fab fabric and thread! My girls grew out of the sizes in the book, 2T-5. So I took a shirt they could each wear and drafted a bodice for their sizes, 6 and 8 . I have linked the PDF of the bodice . The skirt is a rectangle and so are the straps.
